Twenty Six

I don’t know what he did to me, but I really did feel better.

There still wasn’t any real enthusiasm for this job there, but I started checking out what was going on around the station. The trainees were occupying several levels of the military tower, and Zac showed me them in classes doing the early midshipman course work. The trainers were a mixed lot of species, but the students appeared to be soaking in everything they said.

The apartment my parents had selected had a rift in it now, and furniture was being brought in from their home. Most of it looked new, but was the same sort. It reminded me I should be thinking about what I wanted, rather than what I had. According to Zac, they were not moving, but were going to use it as an extension of their existing home. And apparently they still didn’t think I owned the whole station. I was obviously going to have an even harder time convincing them of me owning a whole planet.

The AIs had a Brawler CAP out around the station, and the destroyer patrol was back to doing a circle of the jump points. John popped up while I was thinking about what we actually needed.

“We’ve picked up all the foxes off the Jurassic planet who survived,” he told me. “Should I ask for a destroyer escort?”

“No, just jump the ship here. What’s the mood of the foxes like?”

“Most of them are relieved to get off the planet. All of them saw others get eaten, and some of those who didn’t make it had already taken their teeth.”

“Karma’s a bitch.”

“Indeed. If you’re thinking about letting them loose on the station, that’s maybe not a good idea. Can I jump straight to their world?”

“You may as well. Choose a spot where you won’t be fired on by any of their ships as soon as you appear, and gives you enough time to talk the station into letting you dock.”

“I’ve got several foxes who’re grateful enough to do that talking for us.”

“Do that then. Once offloaded, jump back here, and see if Charlie wants the ship for anything. I guess it would make a reasonable jump ferry with a bit of upgrading.”

“That it would. Thanks, skipper.”

He vanished. But I was already thinking of Admiral Paxton’s question. And I didn’t see any reason why he should be restricted anymore.

“Zac, get me Admiral Paxton.”

A moment later his hollo popped up.

“Admiral, you’re authorised to jump around. I suggest you use the destroyers which don’t have the launch tubes, and appear to be a League fleet rather than attached to me.”

“You want to see if you can keep the mercenary company and the League station separate in people’s minds?”

“If I can. That may not be possible, but it’s worth trying.”

“Where do I park?”

I didn’t have an answer for that.

“I think we’re going to need more military docking. I’ll get someone to let you know. For now, just bring your ships back here, and line them up somewhere.
